7″ tall knit bunny toy, perfect for Easter baskets!

Size: 2-3 years (hand is 5” long)
Yarn: Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Bulky – less than 60 yards (shown in “oatmeal”)
Tools: US size 10.5 and 10 (or 9) double-pointed needles, US size K crochet hook
Gauge: 3.5 sts x 5 rows = 1” square on size 10.5 needles

Cast on 20 sts on size 10 needles (use size 9 if you like a tighter cuff), join into round and work 2×2 rib (*k2, p2* around) for 8 rounds (do more if you‘d like a longer cuff).
Switch to size 10.5 needles and knit 6 rounds in stockinette stitch.
On next round: k16, m1, k2, m1, k2, m1 (23 sts).
On next round: k16, slip last 7 sts to a spare needle or stitch holder for thumb, cast on two sts above thumb.
Rearrange sts so there are 6 sts on each needle, round beginning is between the two cast on sts.
Knit 15 rounds on 18 sts, so hand is 4.5” long from ribbing.
Rearrange sts so there are 9 sts on first needle, 4 on second needle, and 5 on third.
Next round: k2tog, k5, ssk, k2tog, k5, ssk (14 sts).
Knit one round.
Next round: k2tog, k3, ssk, k2tog, k3, ssk (10 sts).
Close using kitchener stitch or three needle bind off on inside.
Pick up and knit 2 sts over thumb opening and k 7 sts from holder to complete round (9 sts).
Knit 4 rounds.
Next round: *k1, k2tog* around (6 sts).
Knit one round.
Next round: *k2tog* around (3 sts).
Cut yarn, draw through live sts and pull tight to close.

Using crochet hook, chain st until you have a string long enough to thread through the sleeves of child’s coat (measure child wrist to wrist with arms outstretched), and attach to the cuff of each mitten.

The first one I made for Oliver, a 3 month old baby who had to undergo heart surgery.

The second one I made for Elias, who had surgery to remove thyroid cancer.

Each doll is about 10″ tall, made of muslin, with yarn hair and a felt appliqued heart, a bandage around the affected area, and a handknit sweater. Elias’s doll also got a scarf, because I figured after throat surgery he could use it.

Garibaldi

Size: 7” tall
Habitat: graveyards
Food: blood worms
Special Attack: unpleasant odor
Notes: Garibaldi is a bat demon from the much marshes of Transylvania. Great clouds of Garibaldis swoop from the low-lying fog & guzzle copious amounts of blood worms from the bait cups of unsuspecting fishermen. When they aren’t eating fishing bait, the Garibaldis haunt the lonely churchyards, tying weeds in knots & digging small holes in order to trip fail old women. The Garibaldis love the sound of breaking hip bones. Legend has it that any children who spill their family’s bait will be spirited away by the Garibaldis, never to be seen again.

The Ultimeat Barbarian

Size: 10” tall
Habitat: fjords
Food: pickled herring
Special Attack: Strength of Nature
Notes: The wolves bark with the wind in the Summer-time. As the moon passes the shadows, the wolves pry the limbs from the conquered ones. This is the world from which the Ultimeat Barbarian climbs. From the chilled fjords of Rutabagaland, dreaming of Valhalla, where he eats vast quantities of meatballs and drinks mead from the horn of an evil dragon. When he isn’t listening to The Ring Cycle on his boom-box, he is most likely engaging in scrimshandery or other chicanery. The Ultimeat Barbarian rides his steed “Vanilla Furry Smith” into battle and the enemy loses faith.
